Slower arrivals · Smaller harbours · Quieter water

Our Purpose

Why quieter routes matter

An independent publication for sailors who value character over crowds — and community over exclusivity.

What we do

Lookoutravirell publishes editorial guides to lesser-known islands, sheltered bays, small harbours and scenic passages. We write for experienced, considerate travellers who want to understand a place before they arrive: its people, its rhythms, its practical limits.

We are based in Stromness, Orkney — a small harbour town that knows both the value of visiting sailors and the pressures they can bring. That perspective shapes everything we publish.

We do not sell charters, berths or advertising placements. We are not affiliated with any harbour authority, tourism board or yacht company.

How we write

  • Character first. We describe communities and landscapes, not "hidden paradises".
  • Grounded claims. We avoid suggesting any place is empty, secret or unspoiled by people.
  • Never pilotage. Our guides support planning; they do not replace charts, pilot books or local authorities.
  • Corrections welcome. If something is out of date, tell us and we will review it.

Sources we respect include official hydrographic charts, the Reeds Nautical Almanac, Clyde Cruising Club Sailing Directions, RCC Pilotage Foundation guides and Imray pilots — along with the harbour masters and residents who know their waters best.
