Before You Go

Before you head farther out

Practical, honest answers for sailors weighing a quieter route.

Are these destinations "undiscovered"?

No. Every place we describe is someone's home and has been visited by sailors for generations. "Quieter" means fewer visiting yachts than famous hubs, not empty or secret.

Can I use your guides for navigation?

No. Our pages are editorial overviews. Use current official charts, recognised pilot books, notices to mariners and local advice for all navigation decisions.

How do I judge how remote a place really is?

Check ferry frequency, fuel and water availability, the nearest repair facilities, mobile and VHF coverage, medical access and sheltered alternatives for every likely wind direction. Our island guide includes a checklist.

What should I provision for?

Carry long-life staples, spares and enough water from well-supplied mainland ports, then buy fresh local produce in modest amounts so island shops can still serve residents.

Do small harbours accept visiting yachts without booking?

Many do, but practice varies. Contact the harbour master in advance by VHF or phone, take the berth you are given and keep fishing and ferry berths clear. See our harbour guide.

How do I anchor responsibly near seagrass?

Look for sand patches, use visitor moorings where provided and respect protected zones. Anchoring on Posidonia seagrass is restricted or prohibited in many Mediterranean areas. More in our bay guide.

What experience level do these destinations suit?

Most are aimed at experienced crews comfortable with tidal planning, anchoring in variable conditions and limited facilities. Build up gradually and seek local training if needed.

Is it a good idea to visit during local festivals?

Festivals can be joyful but strain harbour space and supplies. Ask locally whether extra boats are welcome, and consider arriving after the main celebrations.

How should I handle rubbish and water on small islands?

Reduce packaging before departure, carry rubbish to ports equipped to process it and use fresh water sparingly, especially on dry islands in summer.

Do you accept paid placements?

No. We do not accept payment from harbours, tourism boards or charter companies for inclusion or coverage. Read more on our purpose.
